Election Day: November 8th

posted Oct 12, 2011 8:45 AM by Kilmer PTA   [ updated Oct 25, 2011 7:32 PM ]

Thank you to those that were able to join us for the PTA meeting last Wednesday night.  It was very enlightening to hear the viewpoints of each of the seven candidates running for the three Member-At-Large positions.  For the many of you that were not able to attend the meeting, I hope you will find other venues to hear the candidates speak.  The election on November 8th is HUGE!  At least 6 members - which is one half - of the board member positions will turnover this year.  Our Providence District Representative - Patty Reed - is running unopposed.  But you do have a chance to influence the three Member-At-Large seats.  Please vote on November 8 and let your voice be heard.

Looking to start the school year on a more positive footing with your children?

Wondering what will really work to make that happen?

PEP, “Thriving with Teens”  is where you can take concrete steps to achieving your goals.   We are offering the PEP "Thriving with Teens" parenting class for parents of children ages 12 to 18 at Kilmer Middle School again this fall, but this time it will be in the evening.

Here are the details:

Dates and Time:  The class meets at Kilmer Middle School on Wednesday nights, 7:00 to 9:00pm for 10 weeks, starting Oct. 5 and ending Dec. 14 (skipping Thanksgiving week).

Cost:  $248 per person  (there is a 10% discount for PEP members and a couple discount; scholarships and payment plans also available--contact the PEP Office)

Textbook:  Positive Discipline for Teenagers by Nelsen & Lott  $17.97

The course will cover:

  • An understanding of the role you play in your teen's life
  • Realistic ways to help teens move toward responsible independence
  • Ways to create mutually respectful relationships
  • Effective communication strategies
  • The use of discipline in ways that foster growth and maturity

The last time we offered this class at Kilmer in Winter 2011, it filled to capacity.  If you are interested in enrolling, please don't delay.  Either call the PEP office Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm at 703-242-8824 or download a registration form at http://pepparent.org/pubs/regform.pdf  (Course #433  Title: Thriving with Teens) and fax or mail it into the Parent Encouragement Program.  We do not have plans to offer this class again at Kilmer in the 2011-2012 academic year.
