The Odyssey of the Mind club i
s an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.

The Science Olympiad
club is designed for students interested in science helps to prepare them for Science Olympiad tournaments and non-competitive events

The Chess Club allows and teaches kids to play chess, build chess teams, and compete in local area chess competition events.

The Model
United Nations club simulates United Nations, International Organizations, and governmental bodies such as the World Health Organization, the African Union, and government cabinets - in which participants are assigned to represent countries, organizations, or leaders in order to debate pressing international issues. Over a series of committee sessions, the delegates have to work together constructively in order to introduce working papers and eventually draft resolutions. The sessions end when the committee votes on all the introduced draft resolutions, generally choosing to adopt a single document that addresses the problem being discussed. The sessions are moderated by a Chair and are (with the exception of some Specialized Agency committees!) run under rules of parliamentary procedure.

The Kilmer Middle School Book Fair will get set up on Friday and will run next week, Monday, December 7 – Friday, December 11!

We still need volunteers – we have about 28 spots that are not yet filled. Please take a look at our Volunteer Sign-up Sheet to view available openings: http://www2.mysignup.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi?datafile=kmsbookfair_dec09. We need a lot of help for the fair to run smoothly – please make sure that you scroll all the way down to view all of our shifts. We have a lot of afternoon openings! We also have gaps in the first morning shifts.

The fair is a fun event for the entire school and we appreciate any support that you can provide. Whether or not you volunteer, help us by energizing your student about the fair! For more information, check out our fair homepage: http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/kilmer.

HEALTHY SNACKING TIPS

The rise in overweight children means that parents need to take an active role in providing healthy snacks for their children.

  • Keep snacks small.
  • Don’t eat snacks straight out of the package.
  • Snack only when hungry, not bored.
  • Limit sweet snacks such as brownies, cookies, and candy because they are often loaded with calories and sugar.
  • Offer fruits and vegetables.
  • Offer low fat cheese with whole grain crackers or pretzels.
  • Select snacks from MyPyramid.
  • Quench thirst with water, fruit juices or low fat milk, not soft drinks.
  • Read food labels carefully – if first ingredient is sugar AVOID IT.

Use www.fcps.edu/fs/food/ nutrition calculator to evaluate your snacks at home.

  • Start the day with breakfast.
  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat lighter meals at night.
  • Limit portion sizes of favorite holiday foods, especially desserts.
  • Eliminate night-stress-related gorging, especially in front of the TV.
  • Go to bed feeling light, not “full”.
  • Enjoy your feast, family, and friends.
  • Remember to exercise 60 minutes per day.
